What is MR angiography?

What is special about MRI angiography?
While a conventional MRI primarily images bones, muscles, tendons, or organs, MR angiography specifically targets arteries and veins. This allows for the early diagnosis of narrowing of blood vessels, bulges (aneurysms), blockages, or other abnormalities.
How does an MRA work?
The examination uses the same technology as a standard MRI and relies on strong magnetic fields and radio waves. Depending on the specific purpose of the examination, it may be performed with or without a contrast agent. In many cases, the contrast agent improves the visualization of blood vessels, but it is not always necessary.

What are the benefits of an MR angiography?

Are there any differences compared to CT angiography?
Yes, CT angiography uses X-rays and almost always requires an iodine-based contrast agent. The choice of which method is appropriate in each individual case depends on the specific medical issue.
