Bone density measurements are primarily used to diagnose and monitor the progression of osteoporosis. In osteoporosis, bones become porous and can fracture even from minor falls or slight impacts in everyday life. The disease is often not detected until late in its course, when bone loss is already well advanced. In cases of persistent back pain or other signs suggesting osteoporosis, it is recommended to undergo a bone density test early on to slow bone loss as effectively as possible.

Here’s how a quantitative computed tomography is performed

Quantitative computed tomography is a medical procedure that allows healthcare professionals to determine the density or porosity of bones. It is typically performed on the lumbar spine or the thigh. To determine bone density, several targeted X-rays are directed through the bones. Depending on their density, the bones absorb varying amounts of X-ray radiation. Based on the intensity of the emerging X-rays, the deviation of bone density from the healthy normal state can be determined.

The T-score describes how the measured values differ from those of healthy, young adults. A T-score of 0 to -1.00 indicates healthy bone density. A decrease of 1 in the T-score corresponds to a 30 percent increase in the risk of bone fracture; a T-score of -2.5 or lower indicates a diagnosis of osteoporosis.
