To begin with, we apply a special ultrasound gel to the skin. This ensures that the sound waves are transmitted optimally and allows for precise imaging.
The doctor then carefully moves the transducer over the affected area of the body. Meanwhile, the images appear on the monitor in real time. Depending on the specific issue being evaluated, it may be helpful to move the joint or muscle slightly during the exam. This also allows for the assessment of movement patterns and function.
The exam is generally painless. Only if you are already experiencing discomfort may the pressure from the transducer feel briefly uncomfortable.
